UPM’s BSTM students raise food hygiene awareness

 

 

KOTA TINGGI, August 3 – Students of Bachelor of Science and Food Technology (BSTM) Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) held the SULAM #HYGIENE4ALL Programme to raise awareness on personal and food hygiene among students and traders in the Kota Tinggi district, here, recently.

This programme was a collaboration with the Kota Tinggi District Council, Johor, and the Food Safety and Quality Division of the Johor State Health Department, and it also highlighted the causes of food poisoning that are often ignored by the community.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nor Khaizura Mahmud @ Ab Rashid, lecturer of the FST 3601 Food Hygiene and Sanitation course, said that this programme was to educate UPM students in sharing the knowledge they have learned with the residents.

"Through this programme, knowledge application can be translated into practical skills, with nearly 200 participants including kindergarten, primary and secondary school students, as well as traders and local residents”.

"In addition, this programme could also raise awareness of cleanliness and sanitation among the community in the Kota Tinggi district, ultimately reducing the occurrence of food poisoning cases that have been previously prevalent in the area," she said.

 Various activities were held throughout the programme, such as exhibitions, colouring contests, quizzes, and informative talks on the importance of food hygiene - UPM.
